ARTIST'S COMMENT: This was a study for a very large pastel. I don't always do studies, but I wanted to see if I could capture the rich dawn colors in Sawtooth Mountain before trying it on a four-foot long painting. The Davis Mts are of volcanic origin, and when the light hits them like it did here, molten lava doesn't seem like very distant history!
