"Breaking the Drought"
Lindy Cook Severns plein air pastel painting
Late spring thunderstorms built over the Davis Mountains in Far West Texas. The winter-parched grass of this high desert ranchland came to life with a golden glow, and heavy clouds threw dark shadows across the red rock cliffs. I snatched up my plein air easel and quickly set up within a stone's throw of our place, then I began painting with a fury before I lost the wonderful energy of those clouds. Rain eventually drove me to abandon my painting location, but not before I had the basic light and shadow mapped into my painting, and the motion and sweep of these clouds. I set up my easel at the same spot the next day, and the next to finish my painting, taking care not to change that initial pattern of light and color. I love this one!
